Blue Zones are regions of the world where people consistently live past 100 in good health — Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Nicoya (Costa Rica), Ikaria (Greece), and Loma Linda (California). Researchers have identified common lifestyle patterns that explain their longevity.
## The 9 Power 9 Principles
**1. Move Naturally**
The longest-lived people don't run marathons or lift weights — they live in environments that require constant low-intensity movement. Walk more. Garden. Take the stairs. Movement woven into daily life is more sustainable than structured exercise alone.
**2. Purpose (Ikigai)**
Okinawans call it "ikigai" — reason for getting up in the morning. People with a strong sense of purpose live up to 7 years longer, according to studies.
**3. Downshift**
Stress promotes inflammation and accelerates aging. Blue Zone centenarians have routines to shed stress: prayer, napping, happy hour with friends.
**4. 80% Rule**
Okinawans stop eating when they're 80% full. The "Hara hachi bu" mantra is recited before meals as a reminder. This simple habit creates a consistent calorie deficit without conscious dieting.
**5. Plant Slant**
Beans (fava, black, soy, lentils) are the cornerstone of most centenarian diets. Meat is eaten on average 5 times per month.
**6. Wine at 5**
Moderate drinkers in Blue Zones drink 1-2 small glasses of wine daily with friends, usually with food.
**7. Belong**
All but five of the 263 centenarians interviewed belonged to some faith-based community.
**8. Loved Ones First**
Centenarians put their families first — they invest in children, keep aging parents nearby, and commit to a life partner.
**9. Right Tribe**
Blue Zone centenarians were either born into or chose social circles that support healthy behaviors.
