Morning stiffness is one of the most common complaints from adults over 35. Your joints haven't been moving for 7-8 hours, synovial fluid has settled, and your fascia is tight. The good news? A 10-minute morning routine can change everything. ## Why You're Stiff in the Morning During sleep, your joints don't cycle through their full range of motion. Synovial fluid — the lubricant your joints need — redistributes when you move. Sitting for extended periods during the day compounds this by shortening hip flexors and tightening the thoracic spine. ## The 5-Move Morning Routine **1. Cat-Cow (2 minutes)** Start on hands and knees. Inhale as you drop your belly and lift your gaze (cow). Exhale as you round your spine to the ceiling (cat). This mobilizes every segment of the spine. **2. 90-90 Hip Stretch (90 seconds per side)** Sit on the floor with both legs bent at 90 degrees — one in front, one to the side. Sit tall and feel the stretch in your hip and glute. This is the single best hip mobility drill for desk workers. **3. Thoracic Rotation (10 reps each side)** From a seated position, cross your arms over your chest and rotate your upper body left and right. Keep your hips still. Opens the mid-back and reduces shoulder and neck tension. **4. Ankle Circles (30 seconds each foot)** Lift one foot and rotate your ankle in large circles — 10 clockwise, 10 counter-clockwise. Ankles are often neglected but essential for knee and hip health. **5. Doorway Pec Stretch (60 seconds)** Stand in a doorway, place both forearms on the frame, and gently lean forward until you feel a stretch across your chest. Counteracts the forward-rounded posture from sitting. *Always stop if you feel sharp or stabbing pain. This routine is for general mobility — consult a physiotherapist for specific joint issues.*
