The RDA for protein is 0.8g per kilogram of bodyweight. For a sedentary 40-year-old, that's about 56g per day. But research increasingly suggests this is the minimum to prevent deficiency — not the optimal amount for health, muscle maintenance, or weight management. ## Anabolic Resistance: Why You Need More Protein With Age Aging muscles become less sensitive to amino acids — a phenomenon called anabolic resistance. Younger muscles stimulate protein synthesis from as little as 20g of protein at a meal. After 40, you may need 35-40g per meal to achieve the same response. This means spreading protein intake evenly across meals matters more as you age. ## How Much Do You Actually Need? For adults over 40 who exercise regularly: - **Sedentary to lightly active**: 1.0-1.2g per kg bodyweight - **Moderately active**: 1.2-1.6g per kg bodyweight - **Strength training**: 1.6-2.0g per kg bodyweight For a 170lb (77kg) person who strength trains, that's 123-154g of protein per day. ## Best Protein Sources - **Chicken breast**: 31g per 100g - **Salmon**: 25g per 100g - **Greek yogurt**: 17g per 100g - **Eggs**: 6g per egg - **Cottage cheese**: 14g per 100g - **Lentils**: 9g per 100g (plus fiber) - **Edamame**: 11g per 100g ## Practical Tips 1. Include a protein source in every meal 2. Aim for 30-40g per sitting for maximum muscle protein synthesis 3. Don't neglect protein at breakfast — it sets your satiety for the day 4. Consider a quality protein powder to fill gaps conveniently *Always consult with a registered dietitian if you have kidney disease or other conditions that affect protein metabolism.*
