"My metabolism is shot" is something I hear constantly from clients over 40. And while metabolism does slow with age, the picture is more nuanced than you might think — and far more actionable. ## What Actually Slows Down A 2021 study published in Science tracked metabolic rates across 80 years of life. The findings were surprising: metabolism doesn't slow significantly between ages 20-60. The bigger driver is muscle loss (sarcopenia). Each pound of muscle burns about 6 calories per day at rest. By 40, most adults have lost 5-10 lbs of muscle compared to their 20s — that's 30-60 fewer calories burned per day. Over months and years, this creates meaningful weight gain even without eating more. ## The 4 Proven Ways to Boost Metabolism **1. Resistance Training** Building muscle is the highest-leverage thing you can do for your metabolism. Every pound of muscle you build burns additional calories around the clock — even while sleeping. **2. NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis)** NEAT accounts for 15-30% of total daily energy expenditure. This includes walking, fidgeting, standing, and all movement outside formal exercise. Getting 8,000+ steps per day makes a significant difference. **3. Protein Intake** Protein has the highest thermic effect of food (TEF) — your body burns 20-30% of protein calories just digesting it. Carbs burn 5-10%, fats 0-3%. **4. Sleep Optimization** Poor sleep reduces growth hormone production and raises cortisol. Both promote fat storage and muscle breakdown. Prioritize 7-9 hours consistently. ## What Doesn't Work - Extreme calorie restriction (causes muscle loss, further slowing metabolism) - Metabolism "boosting" supplements (largely ineffective or dangerous) - Excessive cardio without strength training (efficient but doesn't build metabolic tissue) *Always consult your physician before making significant changes to your diet or exercise routine.*
